Pride and Prejudice / Jane Austen
I'm not sure which is the right age for a girl to read this book. It is a pretty dangerous one. I was 15 when I bought it. I was 15 in the 90's when love was romantic, platonic and exciting. And then in 17/9/'96 as I wrote down in my childish inscription, from the neighborhood's bookstore in Patissia, I bought and brought into my home Mr Darcy. Is there a woman, I wonder, that has read this book and hasn't been in love with Mr Darcy even a little? Is Jane Austen suitable only for women? Sure thing is, particularly "Pride and Prejudice" has sold more than 20m copies around the world for a reason.
“There is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” ... this famous introductory phrase is the beginning of the adventures of the Bennets , who live upon a very small income and have five daughters close to marital age, somewhere in the English countryside. A romantic novel full of humor and discreet irony, but most importantly full of characters that are so clearly portrayed through the dialogues and their actions, that come to life through the pages and become your acquaintances. Sarcastic Mr Bennet, silly Mrs Bennet, beautiful and caring Jane, smart and independent Elisabeth, ludicrous Mr Colins, misleadingly charming Mr Wickham....And of course puzzling, mysterious, rude Mr Darcy, the man you want to hate but end up loving.
It is a dangerous novel! It creates high expectations as regarding to Mr perfect. But, I was lucky! I met my own Mr Darcy. Who seamed mysterious and puzzling and rude when we first met, but is absolutely perfect since then! Whom I got married to in 17/9/'96, the anniversary of the purchase of the book (as I found out taking the picture for the blog!! Pure luck????)
