Jitterbug perfume
Ok, I haven't read any other of Tom Robbins' books, but after this one... I am determined to. Mostly to judge by myself, if he did a great job with this book or if he really is the genius everyone is talking about.
" I cannot believe that the most delicious things were placed here merely to test us, to tempt us, to make it the more difficult for us to achieve the grand prize - they safety of the void."
Phrases like this dwell on you. And this is what mostly thrilled me about this novel. That it dwells upon you. You remember the dialogues. You remember the characters. You remember the imperceptible sarcasm that underlies every word.
The novel begins somewhere in ancient Bohemia and arrives to this day, making a lot of travelling throughout space and time. Its' subject? Could be the essence of life, denying to compromise, rebellion, chasing your dream or questioning the limits. Alhobar, a king who put himself above the traditions of his tribe. Priscila, a woman who opposed her stepmother. Marcel, dreamer, romantic, an artist. The exotic, sensual Kudra, who never accepted to compromise with the idea of death. These and the rest of the characters, instruments in Tom Robins' orchestra, that perform impeccably the thunderous melody of life and love against death. All this with the smell of jasmine and the beet as the protagonist.
